v3.0.2 – All About Sharing

November 13th, 2009

The latest version of Surf Canyon (v3.0.2) went out yesterday, so many of you have already received the auto-update. The important new feature is “sharing.” In collaboration with Shareaholic, Surf Canyon now enables users to share virtually any webpage on the internet. By clicking the envelope button in the URL bar at the top of the Firefox browser (this feature is not yet available for Internet Explorer), users can send the webpage currently being viewed to friends and colleagues via email, Gmail, Facebook and Twitter.

Sharing and Craigslist Preview

Should you be interested in more sharing options, from over 60 different services, we’d like to invite you to download the full version of Shareaholic. Shareaholic is an award-winning add-on that has been downloaded over 1 million times by people looking for a customizable, light-weight method of sharing web pages.

Additionally, we’ve expanded the Craigslist image preview functionality to enable full-sized previews upon mouse-over.

[Update 11/13/09] v3.0.3 was released a couple days after v3.0.2 to fix a couple issues that snuck through.

Surf Canyon Surpasses One Million Queries A Day

Real-time Personalization Application for Google, Yahoo! and Bing Experiences User Growth Along With Industry Recognition for SIGIR

OAKLAND, CALIF. November 10, 2009 – Surf Canyon (www.SurfCanyon.com), the developer of the popular application that delivers real-time search personalization on Google, Yahoo! and Bing, proudly announces that yesterday it surpassed one million queries per day.

“Crossing the million queries a day threshold is an impressive accomplishment,” said Mike Cassidy, CEO of travel guide and tour review site Ruba and co-founder of Direct Hit, a search engine that pioneered using user activity to affect relevancy. “Surf Canyon’s real-time search personalization is an exciting innovation and their growth clearly indicates that users are appreciating the value.”

Moreover, in a sign of recognition from the search community, SIGIR, the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval, has decided to publish Surf Canyon’s research. The paper, entitled “Demonstration of Improved Search Result Relevancy Using Real-Time Implicit Relevance Feedback: http://www.surfcanyon.com/SurfCanyonDemonstrationResearchPaper.pdf,” was presented at the SIGIR conference in July. Using blind, control-group studies, the research demonstrates how real-time search personalization is able to improve relevancy, on top of the major search engines, by up to 40%.

“Surf Canyon’s evaluation is done on an operational system with real users, and it gives a lot of insight into the benefits of real-time personalization,” said Thorsten Joachims, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University. “This is a great paper and one of the most interesting, original and relevant IR papers I have read in a while!”

Surf Canyon operates with Google, Yahoo!, Bing and Craigslist. During a standard search, as the user makes selections, Surf Canyon’s instantaneous relevancy algorithm determines what information is being sought and then re-ranks the results “on the fly,” digging out pertinent documents from as deep as page 100.

Surf Canyon, a free Firefox and IE browser app, claims to accelerate your search process with Google, Yahoo, Live Search, Lexis Web and Craigslist by finding relevant results even if they’re buried in page 100 of your search results. With each search, Surf Canyon adds a bull’s-eye icon you can click on to highlight the additional results.”

Additional Funding and New Advisors

October 8th, 2009

VentureBeat LogoAs Anthony Ha at Venture Beat just reported, we have successfully closed an additional $250,000 in funding. We’re naturally excited by the vote of confidence from both our existing as well as new investors and would like to thank them for their support.

The good news, however, does not end there. As mentioned in the article, and previously on this blog, our application has been downloaded over 1 million times and we are now handling roughly 800,000 queries a day. Mozilla has been tremendously helpful in making our add-on available to Firefox users, which we appreciate greatly.

We’re also proud to welcome some exceptional new members to our Advisory Board:

  • Jonathan Abrams – CEO of Socializr and founder of pioneering social network Friendster.
  • Bob Christopher – Former CEO of Ugobe which raised $24 million and developed the Pleo.
  • Dan Martin – Former VP of Business Development at HomeGain.

Finally, the research paper unambiguously demonstrating the extent to which our application enhances relevancy, which we presented at SIGIR ’09, will shortly be published by SIGIR and become officially citable.

We’re working hard on the next revision to Surf Canyon and there will be more exciting news to come, so subscribe to this blog by entering your email in the upper left-hand corner, become a “fan” on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.

IE8 Add-on Gets Microsoft Tweet

September 24th, 2009

We made our application compatible with IE8 back in March with the v2.0.3 release, and then enhanced the IE8 functionality in July with the v3.0.0 release by taking advantage of some specific IE8 features. In particular, we included image previews, along with the top 3 search results, directly in the SearchBar drop-down.

Taylor Swift Dropdown

The official twitter page for Internet Explorer recognized our work this morning with the following tweet, which links to our add-on in the Internet Explorer Add-ons Gallery:

“Semantic real-time implicit personalization with Surf Canyon! What more could you want out of an IE8 add-on? http://bit.ly/kphrm

Also in the IE Gallery you can find our Instant Visual Search plug-in, which offers just the SearchBar integration, as well as the Search Assistant by OneRiot. Together with OneRiot, the real-time search engine company with whom we’ve worked in the past, we’ve developed a OneRiot-customized version of the IE add-on for those users who wants to make sure to get real-time results when they’re searching on Bing, Google or Yahoo!:

v3.0.1 – Little Maintenance Update

August 27th, 2009

While there are no fancy new features or enhancement to announce this time, this latest version was released to handle compatibility with some changes on Google’s search page. If you’re using Bing or Yahoo! then you don’t need this one, but we’d recommend that you grab it anyway.

With this release, we’re suggesting that our Firefox users check out an exciting add-on called Interclue. Ever wanted to know what was behind the link before you clicked? Interclue tells you everything you need to know before you open yet another tab. Small icons appear on mouseover to warn you about dead links, Malware and Phishing Sites. For valid links, Interclue provides a compact preview as well as optional extra information and next action buttons. We hope that you enjoy it!

One Million Downloads on AMO

August 25th, 2009

We’re thrilled to announce that Surf Canyon has surpassed 1 million downloads on Mozilla’s AMO (addons.mozilla.org) website!

1 million downloads on AMO

We have thanked Mozilla in the past for the development of their add-on community and their encouragement of and support for add-on developers, but we’d like to take this opportunity to do so again. Thank you!

As we mark this important milestone, we’d also like to thank the many people who have used our application and provided us with invaluable feedback and constructive criticism. Now, as we like to do, we’ll  point out some recent positive feedback we’ve received on Mozilla’s website:

by PrintingDone on August 13, 2009

very useful, especially for people who use google a lot

by Anneta on July 24, 2009

We’ve been able to find crucial sites on a variety of topics that we’ve never been able to find before! Outstanding Add-On. Highly recommended.

Drill Down Might Be A Better Name

by goodrich41 on July 15, 2009

At first glance, or even first try, this add-on may not seem like it’s very useful, but with just a little use, one realizes its power. Surf Canyon instantly “drills down” through a search to find potentially relevant results beyond the first page. You can easily and quickly narrow search results to exactly what you’re looking for. It’s worth trying, and especially worth taking the minute or so to review the “tutorial.”

Brilliant and excellent automated assistant tool for search engines.

by navigateqd on July 7, 2009

One single click to pick up search results from Page 1-100 relevant to the current one. Google tried to improve the relativity between search string and search result by providing user-defined option to each individual link. But google hasn’t gone this far. 🙂 Brilliant and excellent automated assistant tool for search engines!!!

by Stephen Styffe on July 6, 2009

This one of the few “5 star” firefox add-ons I’ve ever seen. I have seen a lot of good firefox extentions of my time, but this one knocks my socks off! Its amazing how I can search something on Google or Yahoo! now and say that the search relevancy was superb!

by CER on June 23, 200

As a PhD student, this add-on has helped my research tremendously!!! I can find more relevant information with greater efficiency and ease! The developers of this add-on have also been available to help sort out program compatibility issues, and I can’t thank them enough for their professionalism and assistance!

Saves me many hours.

by RobynD on June 18, 2009

I have been using Firefox for about a year now after a continuum of problems with IE7 and crashes. As I began to add some necessary, and now vital and dependent upon add-ons, I decided to try Surf Canyon as I do a good amount of research in my small business and most is done on the Internet in finding marketing trends, projections and outlooks to incorporate in the business, marketing and strategic plans I write for various small to medium sized businesses. I have come to trust and rely on Surf Canyon as it will quickly go through many pages deep on a search or similar item I want to isolate that almost always leads me to some bit of information I need for satisfying my clients. It is now one of the most used items in my add-on toolbox along with No Script. Thanks for a great and user friendly add-on that reduces many hours of time paging through search results to find something.

Unique and effective method for searching

by Mike on June 16, 2009

The method in which the Search Engine automatically “drills down” by Re-Ranking alternative results (as the developer calls it) within what I would call cascading “sub-lists” for each web page listed as each link is selected is very effective and unique way of obtaining desired results. The user can also optionally continue to “drill down” by clicking on the “target” for each selection to get the same “sub-list”. This effective method of “drilling down” your search with cascading levels of “sub-lists” as you make your selections will often cull results that would otherwise typically be many pages down on the search results list. I have found that just two levels of “sub-lists” can very often find results that would have often been 20-30 pages down the list but because of the method of “targeting” results the pertinent web pages will be on the very first page nestled within the cascaded levels of “sub-lists” provided. It is nice to know that when web pages are selected they will open in a new window the way all search engines should but many actually do not unfortunately thus in this case retaining the original search results to more easily return to view other results. I have found the search elapsed time to be very fast and the “target” searches that continue to “drill down” to further detail even faster. To offer a perspective as to how fast, searching the identical thing, I found Surf Canyon each time to be at least twice as fast as Google and as you would expect the manner in which Surf Canyon “drills down” produces more pertinent results in much less time as well. I recommend Surf Canyon with a 5-star rating.
